Georgia has introduced a mandatory health and accident insurance requirement for all tourists entering the country. This came into effect on January 1, 2026.
Under the new regulation, all foreign visitors must hold a valid health and accident insurance policy covering the full duration of their stay in Georgia, including both arrival and departure dates. Tourists will be required to present the insurance policy in either physical or electronic form, and the document must be available in Georgian or English.
The insurance policy may be issued by either a Georgian or an international insurance company. However, the minimum insurance coverage must not be less than 30,000 Georgian Lari (GEL).
The insurance policy must contain the following mandatory information:
- Parties to the insurance contract;
- Covered territory;
- Subject matter of the insurance;
- Commencement and expiration dates of the insurance coverage;
- Insured risks; Amount of the insurance sum (limits);
- Amount of the insurance sum (limits);
- Amount of the insurance premium, place and terms of payment.
- Authorities have clarified that the policy must remain valid for the entire period of a tourist’s stay in the country, ensuring comprehensive coverage throughout the visit.
The following persons are exempt from the mandatory requirement of insurance:
- Holders of diplomatic and special visas;
- Holders of diplomatic, official, service and special passports;
- Accredited employees of diplomatic missions, consular representations, representation offices of international organizations and equivalent representation offices, as well as their family members who hold an accreditation
- Persons whose entering to Georgia is envisaged by International Treaties and Agreements of Georgia;
- Drivers engaged in international road freight and passenger transportation.
